Algeria are back on the biggest stage. After missing out on both 2018 and 2022, the Desert Foxes have returned to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2014, and they have landed in one of the tournament's most demanding groups.

Who is in Group J?

Algeria share Group J with the reigning world champions Argentina, along with Austria and tournament debutants Jordan. It is a group with a clear favourite in Argentina, but also a very real path to the knockouts for the others, especially under the new format where the top two teams and the best third-placed sides all advance.

The challenge

Argentina will be expected to top the group. That leaves Algeria, Austria and Jordan competing for the remaining qualification places. Austria bring European pedigree and organisation, while Jordan arrive as an unknown quantity making their first ever World Cup appearance. For Algeria, the margins are fine: a strong start and a positive goal difference could be enough to progress even with a defeat to Argentina.
